Elthorne Community Project
"Bringing the Community Together"
Who are we? Elthorne Community Project works with local residents, tenants & residents associations (TRAs) and community centre management committees to improve and increase the range of events, activities and facilities that exist across the Elthorne area of North Islington. We started life in December 2001, and are part of Caxton House Community Centre. We are currently funded by the Big Lottery.
What do we do? Our ethos is based on the simple idea of "helping people to help themselves" and the idea that "on our own we can achieve little but by working together we can achieve a lot".
- Elthorne Youth Network: We co-host this with Elthorne Regeneration, and it currently has a membership of 43 individuals, groups and organisations.
- Elthorne Youth Body: We are also in the process of establishing a youth forum to run alongside the youth network (above). This will give young people from the area a chance to come together, have their say, and - very importantly - give them an oppurtunity to start making things happen in their community.
- Intergenerational Project: In conjunction with Age Concern and the youth forum, we will run a small project that will involve young and old people interviewing each other to challenge perceptions and to talk about "What it's like being young"
- Information Guide: We are in the process of producing a user-friendly and accessible "single point" of infromation self-help guide for new and existing residents in the area.
- Community Media Project: From our discussions with local residents, play and youth workers, and the council's Young People's Services, there is strong support for setting up and developing a community media project in the area (which will include community radio), primarily to engage young people, but also to provide training, and the opportunity for different "communities" to communicate with their own and each others.
- Community Newsletter: We produce and deliver "Elthorne Community News" - our community newsletter - on a quarterly basis to 5,000 homes across the area.
