London Capital Credit Union
(formerly Haringey, Islington & City Credit Union)
Who are we? We are a volunteer led, locally owned and controlled savings and loans co-operative, dedicated to encouraging people to save rather than borrow. We are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority and have been operating since 1997. Anyone who lives or works or studies in the London Boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington or the City of London is eligible to join the credit union.
What do we do? We aim to assist people facing problems with debts, and to help people prevent over indebtedness by promoting saving rather than borrowing. We have no hidden transaction charges, no minimum savings requirement unless you take a loan.
Because we have no outside shareholders we can help people on very low incomes to escape the poverty trap by ending reliance on loan sharks. Any surplus made from our loans is reinvested in the credit union or returned to our members as a ‘co-op dividend’.
Many members choose to place their savings with the credit union as an ethical investment, recognising our work in dealing with the causes and symptoms of excessive borrowing, and in keeping money in the local community.
Our office on the first floor of Caxton House is open between 9.30am-5.00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (Closed Thursdays for training & audit). An answerphone service is available when the office is closed. Full online account access is available to members.
